What you miss in the story is that Satan cheated!
Adam and Eve were told not to eat of the fruit from one tree, life does not get much simpler then that does it! Eat, drink, pick the flowers and run around naked.
It was Satan who suggested they didn't have every thing they needed to be happy and entrapped them.
Satan maintains all of us are reprobates and belong in his prison and he could not or would not wait for Adam and Eve to violate that one rule. So he cheated, that is why in the Old Testament Satan is referred to as the "Advisory".
What is also missed by many is that Satan accused God of not being fit for the position! He accused God of being unjust.
Now here is the crux of the matter. In the New Testament repentance is stressed. Repentance is in a way learning from our mistakes. God maintains those who will learn from their mistakes should be given another chance.
Take Adam and Eve, they did not admit they made a mistake and tired to place the blame elsewhere. Maybe, just maybe if they had repented things would be different now. But they did not and more then half of the Atheists and some Theists still think Adam and Eve did the right thing by engaging in wickedness.
