After making your minimum payments, pay the cards with the highest interest rates first. The concept of paying the cards with the smallest balances first is that it's supposed to give you some sort of psychological boost because you have the satisfaction that you paid something off. In my opinion that's just stupid and meaningless. Look at it this way, if you have $5,200 in debt today, don't charge anything else, and pay down $1,000 today, you now have $4,200 in debt, regardless of which card or cards you pay towards. In one month, by paying the cards with the highest interest rates first, your interest charges will be lower because you're paying less interest, and your total debt will be lower than it would have been by paying the smallest balance first. You will pay of your cards faster by paying the ones with the highest interest rates first. That's just basic math, nothing more.
