She wasnt getting paid for her mat leave and she told the bank that but they didnt care. Can this happen? Is there anything that can be done? Why didnt they give her a grace period or something.

It's called planning. You have to have money saved for situations like this, or get funds from someone (like the twins dad in this case). Your mother had 9 months of pregnancy to make her situation different.

Yes, that is how credit can get messed up. Did you have a question?

You get a job and help out. The twins' father owes money on this and I guess you aren't mentioning him for a good reason. Credit always IS a trap and now you see this. When you grow up and they start throwing credit applications at you left and right remember what your mom went through.

First place I would start is finding out if the employer stated they will pay her maternity leave.

She knew she was knocked up or would be or whatever so why didn't she pay down some of this debt FIRST? Where is the Daddy?

Sounds like she could not afford to have a child and she knew how close to the edge she already was.

Why do you think the bank shouldn't be paid because she decided to have kids??? How does this make any sense???

Stores have bills to pay too and need to get their money when buyers promise to pay them not just whenever they get money, Your mom shouldn't buy things she can't afford to pay for.

If the employer was required to pay her - either by state law or by their own contract - then she can sue them to get her pay with interest. This won't fix her credit score, but she might get them to cover the interest she owes on the debt.

On the other hand, if she racked up a bunch of debt KNOWING that she would be unable to pay it back, that's her problem.

There IS a grace period: if you miss ONE payment you can call and apologize and they'll usually remove the late fee. There's also a minimum payment, meaning she didn't have to pay back the whole debt, only 2% per month. The fact that she wasn't even able to come up with that much, means she is in a lot more financial trouble than you know about.

And now she expects to pay for three children? Not gonna happen.

Let this experience be a lesson to you. Don't have kids until you can afford them.

It's not the bank's fault your mom had babies. She borrowed the money, she's responsible for paying it back as agreed to when she borrowed it. She knew nine months ahead she was having a baby, so she should have planned. Why is this the bank's problem?

Most places don't pay while you are on maternity. You can get paid if you have enough vacation time.

Yes they can "ruin" her credit if she doesn't make payments on-time.

They did give her a grace period. And they only required her to make minimum payments

She knew she was going on maternity leave months before she did.
