Society is not the same landscape it was in the past. You could starve to death if you didn't hunt or fish, because grocery stores and markets were not located everywhere. You also have to take into consideration that crops were not always reliable, and people in a community could lose their crops with bad weather. Most people had gardens and family farms were common. Certain crops grow better in certain climates (and there are some places in this world where the terrain is not as friendly for food production). If you take up the hobby of gardening, you will find that on the back of your seed packets it will tell you what months to plant your seeds, and when to expect them to grow to maturity. Crops do not grow over night, sometimes it can take several months. It is difficult to grow food in the cold outdoor winters, this is why hunting is especially common in places like Alaska still, and they rely on the meat from caribou during the extreme winter months. Produce is extremely expensive there, because of the great distance to import these foods. Veganism would not even be a "thing" in such places as well as being "anti-gun," because they still need these things in order to survive. There used to be a lot more wildlife in America like buffalo, bears...etc...but Alaska still is very nature-oriented, and has been called the last frontier. If our ancestors were not successful hunters we would not be alive today. Many people probably didn't enjoy killing deer, cattle, sheep...etc... but they knew it was necessary in order to keep themselves and their families alive.
Even Native Americans did not kill for sport, but were thankful when they could provide for their tribes, and left other animals alive so that these animals could reproduce, so the Native Americans could continue to sustain themselves. In some places, hunting and fishing is not really practical like if you live in New York City, and you may not even want to eat the fish caught in some of those waters like the Hudson River. Even though America has numerous stores all over the place, there are still countries out in the world where they rely on hunting, fishing, and during certain months hope to reap a harvest - if flooding, snow, destructive insects, and intense heat haven't destroyed their crops
