You live in an apartment? You go look at the bathroom door. It has a privacy lock. Same lever handle set up. Check your outside door. It will be a lever handle with a twist lock on the inside and a key lock on the outside.?
AM I BASICALLY RIGHT SO FAR?
So essentially any knob can fit any door. Right? as the doors are identical. Right?
Now, what is it that you want? A key lock for your room? Every apartment has a manager (or Landlord) and he has working for him a Handyman who has a bunch of extra stuff in case something breaks (extra toilets, sinks, electrical fixtures, rugs, and DOORKNOBS, (unlockable and lockable).
. So you ASK
if you can have your doorknob swapped out for a key locking door knob for some LAME reason. If you are sharing the apartment without the LL knowing about it, then you in for trouble...if you are subletting.
. If everything is on the Up &Up with that; no big deal.
TO ME THEY ARE ALL DOOR KNOBS NO MATTER THE SHAPE.
They have boxes of extra locks from other apartments from other buildings. It is not a biggy. The handyman can come up and change it for you. That is why he is employed. The LL could be the handyman as this is a simple job.
I was the painter for the Apartment/hotel outfit and so I know what is in the storage room. All the stuff for all the units. They don't really care that you want a lock on your door. They still have access if they NEED TO BE THERE.
, As you want a key for the room, the LL also gets a copy of the key as he has a key for everything in the building or he has a skeleton key that gets him into any room.
. That is mandatory that he have a key for all the locks in case of a fire so the firemen gain access past the door lock.
. The LL has no right to enter your apartment for any reason.(EXCEPT FOR EMERGENCY SITUATIONS)... That is an invasion of privacy...and he would suffer a fine or even the loss of his license as being a LL.
Meaning he would have to work for a living.
They are not ready to do that.
