Why do some people think that we could have a referendum on abolishing the monarchy?

They'd never allow it to happen and would ignore the results anyway if they were inconvenient. What would they voluntarily give up their enormous amounts of wealth and power?

Update:

*why would they

I am speaking from the other side of the pond here but it seems like those angry with the Brexit vote are most likely the ones behind these shenanigans.

Hi as usual the anti royal issue. never looking at the big picture of what revenue it brings in. americans came here recently on not one not two but three occasions spending money dollars flooding into just to see three weddings. so teh tax man was rubbing his hands many times VAT and airport taxes. so this just goes to show how short sighted you are.

If we didnt have a monarchy , we would have a presidency . or similar titled role... for the leader of our country. No matter you have there will always be people who dont like the function of the role and the advantages it offers for he person/persons in the role.

You already have an indirectly-elected Prime Minister, who is head of government. The monarch isn't not the "leader" of the UK. He or she exercises no power, whatever on-paper powers exist. An elected head of state would end up like the one in Italy: his name is barely known to half the Italians.

We could, but it would be pointless - a clear majority would back keeping them, although if a stripped down monarchy where the Eugenies etc had to fend for themselves might prove an interesting option.

It shows the fallacy of referendums - pointless to hold them if you already know the outcome, positively destructive and dangerous if you don't.

There is no need for a referendum on the Royal Family as everyone know what the out come would be because the majority of people are in favour of keeping the Royal Family.

I have never seen any evidence whatsoever of ANYONE here in the U.K, who thinks a referendum on the monarchy, would be a good idea. Anyone who privately thinks so however, would be the type of person who would arrange a running race, between a Mo Farrer and a patient in a permanent vegetative state.

They'd be too afraid of the result to ever hold one and after the EU vote I don't think they will ever do anything that drastic again, they didn't think the EU referendum was going to go the way it did.

    Who is they?

Anyway, if royalty was abolished queenie et so would still be rich. They would enjoy a great life away from public service, boring meetings, meet and greets with foreign despots, and visiting god awful places.

Because some people are stupid it would seem like a good idea.

But they are no doubt the stupids who want referendums but only if they can decide the outcome.

Some people want an inquest, referendum or debate on everything.

Spending other people's money is something some people specialise in.

As for a referendum on the royals, another daft idea that would no doubt appeal to the needy, greedy, envious and stupid.
