The average shorthair dog needs only to be bathed every 8 weeks or so. Longhair dogs may benefit from more frequent baths but no more than every 4-6 weeks is best for the skin. If your dog tends to get dirty often, I recommend a wipe down with a damp washcloth or a simple rinse with water to remove mud/etc. If your dog gets extremely dirty or into something gross, an occasional extra bath won’t harm their skin, but over bathing a dog will cause dry, flaky skin, and an intense “doggy” odor.
It’s much more important for dogs to be brushed regularly than bathed often. A dog that is brushed often will have a healthier skin and coat as you are ensuring the skin’s natural oils are well distributed, and removing dead hairs that are trapped in the coat, both of which can help you avoid that “doggy” smell in your companion. Even shorthair dogs should be brushed regularly to maintain the skin.
