When stuck next to someone in traffic who thinks we all LOVE the crap they are listening to, I put on a classical station, and BLAST AT FULL VOLUME; sometimes I sing along. (We have also done this on the beach, when boomboxes were in fashion.) When the light changes, I wave goodbye to them - sometimes I do not use all the fingers on that hand.
Now - as a former/retired teach in NY - WHY WHY WHY is this allowed in your school????? Since I taught music, when I had a study hall assigned to me in my own classroom, which had a good music system, I would bride them - if they could all work silently, or in duos ( like practicing foreign language skills) I wold play music for them the next class. MY CHOICE - school admin would not let them bring in whatever - it had to be a known AM or FM station. Some of them said "never mind . . ." - so would ask if they could earn a study hall where I would let them talk the last half. No problem. Every so often, I would tell them they could have the whole period - and sometimes even let them choose new seats for the day. They learned that reasonable behavior gets reasonable privileges.
