Are the iconic NY yellow cabs driven by non-English speakers who do not know directions?

When I was in NY none of the cabbies spoke English. I gave the driver my destination and told him which way to go. He went around the long way to get more money so I had him stop the cab and I jumped out and never paid, I was so mad. When I finally got an American cabbie I was so relieved.

Driving a cab in NYC has historically been one of the occupations that new immigrants gravitate to. Many cab drivers have accents, but they must speak English. Sometimes a new driver might not know where a specific location is. But that can be true for anybody (cab driver or not, immigrant or native) at any given time.

That hasn't been my experience. When I use a city cab, I've found them polite and they knew where they were going.
