Consider first that the OLD WATER HEATER IS JUNK. Handyman is not into collecting junk.
Some people hang onto JUNK for some other purpose. They make FAUX art with it.
The handyman just sees junk because "in most cases" the CITY charges a FEE to dump these items. Scrap metal yards DO NOT WANT THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE RUSTING DIRTY METAL JUNK..
Should the handyman have to pay for the removal and dump fees for your Junk? NO WAY
SOME Garbage Collectors DO NOT pick up that garbage.(NOT EVEN SPECIAL PICK UP)..meaning it has to be hauled away by you(or in this case the handyman and taken to the dump where he is charged to drop it off.
. Why should he have to pay for the removal of YOUR JUNK?
FYI: Sometimes it does take a long time to hook up a new tank because it is a different size than the original; so as the handyman is not a plumber...he does not have all the plumbing tools, and additional pipes and adapters to make it a quick job. The tools he has suffice for most cases. But he would have to go out and get the correct adapter connections to work with your old plumbing. Taking 4 hours means there was a lot more that was OLD that HAD to come out and be updated.Out with the cast iron plumbing and in with Copper or plastic lines.
Perhaps you should have hired a Plumber @$225.00/hr? Yeah they are not cheap. And they do not take anything away nor apologize about that.
Now, lets say you paid the handyman $15./hr After 4 hours...that means shutting off the water and draining the water tank and then disconnecting it and removing it from its position and out the door into the back yard and then Getting the new hot water tank and bring it into the house and hook it up
(I see 4 hours there without any complications in the plumbing - and usually there is complications which take even longer to sort out...I see 6 hours easy so $90.00 in his work. (A plumber will not even start his truck for the job.)
The tank may have cost you $250.00. That is a part YOU have to pay for. So, with additional elbows and plumbing connections it cost you $375.(guessing because you just say "far too much" which is not a number) Lets say my figure is about right.. Now the handyman can leave your junk in your yard because it belongs to you.
If you want it gone it will cost you $80 because the city charges that fee to dump that junk.
WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? It belongs to you and you want to dump it. The city charges to take this kind of trash. Blame the City, not the Handyman.
. The Handyman is probably not even charging you the use of his truck or his gas to take the item to the dump. Many just do it because it has to be done.& it is not a big deal. But they are not going to pay for it. (the gas and their time they threw in for free)
Handyman does not think in the business sense, as their job is not strictly plumbing. Otherwise his work would have costed you more.
(you know closer to the plumbers cost) and plumbers do not take the water tank to the dump for you.
So, a plumber could have done the work for $1000.00 but you got it done CHEAPER AND YOU ARE STILL COMPLAINING?
AGAIN, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? LIFE IS MORE EXPENSIVE THESE DAYS.
Elderly women, Elderly men. It is all the same thing.
