Yes, overkill for most gaming and photo retouching purposes, but since you're not paying for it, it's no problem at all. DDR4 RAM is now some of the most expensive components on a PC these days. At modern DDR4 RAM prices, that 32-GB would likely cost anywhere between $280 to $500, depending on the performance and quality of the RAM, which is about the same prices as a very high-end CPU nowadays. That's just nutty prices, traditionally RAM hasn't been that expensive: usually for the RAM, you should expect to pay only about half the price of your CPU, more or less. So getting such a gift for free is a really expensive gift.
There is currently a lawsuit that has been filed against memory chip manufacturers, alleging that they are colluding with each other to keep the prices of RAM artificially high.
