God said, "As a man thinketh, so is he." But God is not in courtrooms judging criminals at this moment in time. No man knows what another man thinks. As for opinions, I've noticed in my lifetime that everyone has an opinion. And their opinions often change as they grow wiser.

Your question is like asking "Why do I like red when it's my favorite color?" The question answers itself. You should have asked "Why are people so against thought crimes? Why is it human nature to want to punish people for opinions different from their own?" The key part of the question is "why is it human nature?". The answer is that it's a survival mechanism. Humans require society for survival. Society requires a certain level of conformity to remain healthy and be functional. It's not unlike your body sending white cells and antibodies to the site of a wound. If it didn't, the wound could become life-threatening if an infection sets in and spreads.

You may have noticed that punishment for conspiracy to commit a crime is almost as harsh as punishment for the crime itself. It's the same principle in a social context as my white blood cell example. Conspiracy is planning and having serious thoughts about doing something. People cannot be caught and punished for thinking things, but as soon as the thoughts are verbalized or are written down, the crime is as good as having been committed in the eyes of the law. Go around spouting racial "hate speech", for example, and you're likely to end up in the slammer. Say something particularly offensive on YA and what you posted will most likely get deleted.

Thoughts are actually very interesting synaptic events in our brains....we don't really know where they come from.

If by "thought crimes", u mean policing other ppls personal thoughts, we are against it because of freedom.

If u want a thought police type of society, move to a nation that is under sharia law.

I assume u also believe ppl should be considered guilty of a crime until they prove their innocence?
