Can anyone reach state of certainty through thought alone?
I think certainty is like the north pole, and we like compasses in a world full of moving parts, all made of iron.
All our lives we keep trying to point in the right direction, waiting for the needle to hit the right direction before deflecting to the other side, each time believing will not let the moment pass.

Only through self deception as there is no such thing as absolute certainty in life. The best we can do is reach a high probability approaching certainty but there is always the possibility of error. Quantum physics serves to illustrate our own shortcomings in understanding certainty
Acceptance that things aren't always what they seem gives us the capability to reach a state of being certain enough to think our way to a working hypothesis. I think therefore I am is only the point where the stylus is on the record, and what if Descartes was wrong. It doesn't mean that the stylus wont continue in it's track and the music to play, or that the record ceases to exist when the music stops
Certainty implys inflexability with all it's arrogance in a universe of change. It may be wiser to keep an open mind

I think therefore I am, this sorted, but then it gives me a new worry, a thought - who am I

There is no actual 'certainty'; as, it will only be produced in the relative perspective of thought.
Certainty is only a relative, deductive conclusion, in perspective.
There are only two actual certainties; and, they are: Life and Death of the body.

About specific things, yes, sometimes. Some things yield entirely to reason and logical deduction.

“Everything is more complicated than you think. You only see a tenth of what is true.
There are a million little strings attached to every choice you make; you can destroy

never ever trace it to its source.”
