The amount of time (hours/day) a pump is operational defines its duty cycle. Continuous duty operation refers to a pump operating the majority of the day. It doesn't mean running ALL the time.

F'rinstance, a compressor supplying air to a workshop, tire depot or whatever would be switched on all day and able to cycle on and off as necessary to keep the reservoir topped up. That would be a continuous duty cycle. The little pump you use to inflate your tires is not of that standard.

  • A piston compressor that specifies a 100 percent duty cycle does not mean it can run continuously, but that it can provide air at a specific pressure and flow 100 percent of the time with the help of a storage tank. ... A compressor advertises a 100 percent duty cycle rating of 25 cfm at 100 psi.
