What can be used to replace lard when making vegetarian or vegan pasties?

    Solid vegetable fat, Sunflower spread.

    Coconut oil or shortening, or hydrogenated oils like crisco.

    I think earth balance may also work.

    vegetable shortening..in UK I think one brand is called Cookeen or Flora White. Completely animal free and been around for nearly 100 years.

    Vegetarians can use butter and vegans can use solid vegetable shortening.

    Oils, fake butter (margarine), and vegan butter will not yield the same results and make the pastry tough and chewy and very greasy.

    Solid vegetable shortening. Vegetable oil doesn't work properly. You don't get the flakiness.
