Here's my opinion on the subject:
I don't believe that guns should be eliminated completely from our world. However, I am absolutely disgusted that a 19-year-old is unable to purchase a drink in a bar but can somehow get his hands on an AR-14. I think that much stricter controls should be placed on gun possession/usage. I also do not believe that a teacher will need to have a gun in their possession while at school.
The reason why these shootings happen is either because the student is mentally ill or seeking revenge of some sort. These homicidal tendencies all can branch off of issues at home or issues at school. And frankly, I think that the support system at my American middle school is terrible. We have a fist fight at least once a week. People vape in my classes and swallow the smoke and have been caught smoking marijuana outside of the building after school ended. Our school has been on the news multiple times in my three years spent here for child pornography and two kids at my school have been expelled just this year because someone has leaked their nudes to the student body. I have been repeatedly sexually harassed by several classmates this year. Two gun threats have reached our school in the first semester alone. A teacher has made racist remarks to several students causing protests before and after school - and what does the school do? Absolutely nothing.
What would happen if we were to give our teachers guns? It's more than likely that there are psychopathic teachers out there. And do you think a frightened teacher would have the best aim in the world? What if a teacher accidentally shot a student? But the real problem arises when we ask ourselves, "Why are we combatting violence with more violence?" What is that teaching future generations of innocent children? That we can just shoot each-other and fix all our problems?
We need to support these confused and mentally ill teenagers. 2/3 of all chronic mental illnesses occur in humans between the ages of 14 and 24, and less than 40% of them get the help that they need. Instead of giving guns to our school administrators, we should create a safe environment in schools where kids have someone they know they can trust and talk to when something is going on in their lives. Instead of just suspending a student for a few days when they do something wrong, we should punish them but also make sure they are okay. These kids need help.
We should also go over our drills more. Teachers need to be trained to keep students calm in these situations. Acting impulsively is not the answer, but staying calm in these incidents will keep everyone a lot safer.
You may not agree with everything I say, but I do not think that guns should be given to teachers.
