Contrary to civilian thinking, PTSD is not caused by fear of death. It is caused by fear of having to kill people. Think about it, for over 60 years we have made life sacred. We bend over backwards to make sure even the most vile serial killer rapist gets a fair trial. We bend over backwards to make sure his rights were not violated and his execution is painless. We will spend millions trying to save a premie who weighs less than one pound, knowing it might cost millions to take care of him for the rest of his life. We will "Do every thing we can" to save some old person with Alzeheimers because we love them so much. So we take kids raised with this kind of thinking and send them into a war zone and tell them to KILL THE ENEMY. No wonder they go nuts. And talking about it does NOT help unless it is with a professional who knows how to help and what to say. So ask them what their best assignment was, did it have pretty girls, were there nice beaches, how was the skiing? But if they do not bring up war and shooting and death then do not ask about it.
