Is Anthony Hopkins A Great Actor?
In Silence Of The Lambs (1991) he gave one of the greatest performances of all time, as Hannibal Lecter, he was terrifying, charming, weirdly his acting was so good it made the character likeable.
He was very good in Hannibal (2001), which I really enjoyed and I prefer Julianne Moore to Jodie Foster, haven't seen Red Dragon (2002) yet, is that good?
Has he played a villain apart from Hannibal Lectern?

I think so. Red Dragon was good, not great like Silence of the Lambs was. That wasn't for Anthony Hopkins' acting, though. That had more to do with Jodi Foster turning down the role of Agent Starling and Julianne Moore being recast in it. Julianne Moore, who is a great actress, too, obviously played the role very differently that Jodi Foster did and looks very different than Jodi Foster. If the first film had not been so impactful, it might not have been such a big deal, but it was so, so, so was. Jodi Foster completely defined the role of Agent Starling, which makes it absolutely impossible not to constantly be noticing that Julianne Moore isn't Jodi Foster and that her Agent Starling seems like an entirely different person--not nearly so tightly wound, so intense in that way Jodi Foster can be where it looks like all this emotional boiling is going on just beneath her surface such that it seems it might escape at any moment but never does. Julianne Moore is much more expressive in her acting, so all of Agent Starling's neuroses are present, but Julianne Moore's Agent Starling wears them much more on her sleeve. Anyway, that was the downfall of Red Dragon. That's why Red Dragon wasn't great. It might have been if not for Silence of the Lambs, but Jodi Foster's performance as Agent Starling in Silence of the Lambs was just so iconic that Red Dragon can't escape its gravity and it didn't matter what Julianne Moore did, she couldn't have made the role work for no other reason than she's not Jodi Foster.
You know, Hannibal Rising was a really, really good film. It doesn't have Anthony Hopkins in it because Hannibal Lecter is a teenager in it. It goes into Hannibal Lecter's origin, and the kid they get to play him nails it.
