Soak in hot water with plenty of powder bleach cleanser 15 minutes and then use more cleanser and a brush to clean.
*** Put it in the dishwasher if available / it will fit, that's the easiest way to clean a home size vent hood screen.
Caustic cleaners work really good but they can only be allowed for a few minutes before spraying down with water. Someone mentioned not to do this but it does work the best, this is how they clean restaurant aluminum vent screens. Diluted caustic soda or EZoff in a spray bottle, wait 5 minutes and scrub brush 'n spray with scorching hot water. We used to use a pressure washer off the 180F NSF commercial hot water heater drain, very little scrubbing involved and you can keep spraying more cleaner on as you hit it with the brush and hot water repeatedly out in the parking lot. We used to do this twice a year at the KFC, the aluminum in the NSF filters can handle limited use of sodium hydroxide.
