Well we weren't so we don't have to worry about that. Human's earthly existence is a result of Adam and Eve committing Original Sin. Christ came to make the New Covenant with mankind, because of how man portrays God as anthropomorphic and "elsewhere", as in the Old Testament. The God Jesus spoke of in the New Testament is described as a Transcendent Reality, as well as an Immanent one.
How is it possible to be "separate" and "apart" from a God expressed as 'everything', 'everywhere' at 'all times'? Man's mortal condition is a consequence of forgetting one's identity as spiritual beings, and identifying with worldly ego desires, that create a world of misery and suffering for ourselves and others. Christ taught that we are all children of God, and that the same 'Divine Essence' that resides in Him, resides in us all.
Jesus Christ was made out to be an exceptional man because the common person lacks awareness and understanding, while being estranged from themselves. This is why Jesus taught, "Ye are gods", and, "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you. This was contrary to the traditional orthodoxy of the church authorities during Jesus' time, and was most likely why He was wrongfully accused.
The story of Lucifer, Adam and Eve, share the common theme of falling to the seduction of "power" once offered "free agency" from God. Lucifer, God's Highest Angel, was likely God's first trail run for freewill. Once aware of his free agency, Lucifer became envious of God's position above him, and sought to remove and replace God. Adam and Eve thought it possible to equal, and even surpass God, by attaining what is His, and were misled into eating from the Tree of Knowledge.
Out of His Unconditional Love, it is God's Will that we have 'freewill', so that we may choose Him on our own, which demonstrates that He does not Rule by "force". Love that has to be forced, cannot be love at all. This is why God made the mortal world one of "variety" and "diversity", which offers, positivity, negativity, and neutrality, and is suitable for the capacity to choose. Lucifer, Adam and Eve, accepted a fallacy that is not possible in the Heavenly realms, therefore God made it so there are realms where our fallacies can be realized.
Having their existence already made perfect for them, Lucifer, Adam and Eve, did not know any better, and became fixated with self-involvement. Had they known better, they would had refused God's offer of freewill and trust that God has everything taken care of, without our input. Jesus is an example of man using his freewill to 'surrender freewill', at great and profound depth, unto God, to serve a purpose greater than the sake of his own.
Freewill can be a gift or a curse, depending on how it is used. One can be a prisoner of ego, or progress to advanced levels of spiritual awareness. Every instant is an opportunity to choose differently than we have in the past, which alters the available options we have to select from. Being in full God/Self-Realization, beyond freewill, there are no "wants" or "needs", which comes with the recognition that one already 'is' everything that could be possibly wanted or needed. What could make one happier?
Following in the Way of Christ is not a result of what one "does" or "has", but the effortless recognition of oneself as an aspect of the Divine.
