Im having trouble with this question, can someone give me a thorough explanation please.

In two hours he swims 6 km and it takes 1/3 of an hour to swim the last 1 km.
So, 2 and 1/3 hours
Alternative method:
You know that speed = distance/time so rearranging that time taken = distance/speed = 7/3.
But perhaps when you got that far, the answer in the form 7/3 looked unfamiliar.
7/3 is 2 and 1/3 hours which is 2 hours and 20 minutes,
(because 1/3 of 60 minutes is 20 minutes).
You should have been able to do this on your own. Since you were having trouble, that should tell you that you need to try to improve your understanding of the lessons before you get seriously behind the others in your class. Speak up and ask for explanations if ever a subject seems confusing.

If you are familiar with the relationship Distance = Rate times Time, you
will recognize that here Distance is [7km], Rate is speed =[3km/hr] & Time
is [hr]. So D = RT and T = D/R = {7km}/[3km/hr] = (7/3)[hr] = (2 1/3)[hr] =
2hr, 20 min. End of story.

7 km × (1 hour)/(3 km) = 7/3 hours = 2⅓ hours
⅓ hour × (60 min)/hour = 20 min
2⅓ hours = 2 hours and 20 minutes

speed = distance / time <<< solve for time
time = distance / speed
time = 7 / 3 = 2 and 1/3
so 1/3 of an hour = (1/3) X 60 = 20 min.
answer ... 2 hours and 20 min.
