What does delay sentencing mean ?

I'm a 23 year old transgender female that was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Due to counseling and treatment. Their going to set a plea of no contest in April and set off sentencing for a year meaning Delay sentencing. What does that mean exactly ?

    It means just that -- Normally, sentencing occurs quickly after a conviction. By pleading "no contest" you are convicted as you have chosen not to contest any of the facts of the case nor present any defense. Often, your plea agreement will specify something like your sentencing is delayed pending the outcome of your counseling and treatment and usually if you successfully complete the program, they will give you a reduced punishment -- like converting the 30 days in jail you might have otherwise received to time-served or community service. You really should be asking your lawyer what exactly you're agreeing to do and what the consequences are. You should be asked when entering a plea of no contest if you understand and accept the consequences -- don't say yes if you don't understand. Someone HAS to explain it to you if you ask.

    It means you have a year before you have to go to jail.
