Is therre any point in teaching algebra in schools?

Some academic subjects typically taught in school have obvious life benefits - English, one or two foreign languages, arithmetic, geography. I appreciate having some education in physics and history, and I can see the point of giving children a chance to shine in chemistry though it has never been of use to me... show more Some academic subjects typically taught in school have obvious life benefits - English, one or two foreign languages, arithmetic, geography. I appreciate having some education in physics and history, and I can see the point of giving children a chance to shine in chemistry though it has never been of use to me personally. But algebra? Does anyone other than a professional mathematician ever have a use for it? If not, why not teach it only at university to those who choose maths for their degree?
