How strong is the human stomach acid?

Stomach acid (Hydrochloric acid) acid is around PH1-2 and it can apparently dissolve steel in 2 weeks, but whats the limit? Can it dissolve everything but in a set period of time?

The stomach acid is strong with a low pH being able to digest a lot of things. While it sounds impressive that it can dissolve steel, think of all the minerals and nutrients that your body needs (think iron for your blood)! It was designed to break things down so your body can absorb it. But I don't recommend you go eating metals - you would likely be poisoned and end up in the ER!

Also, not everything can be dissolved in stomach acid. If it dissolves everything, wouldn't your stomach eat you inside out?! :P An example of something that can withstand low pH = the flora of bacteria that lives in your intestinal tract - they are resistant to low pH (acidophiles).

Steel is very susceptible to attack by acid. Other things are not. It cannot dissolve everything. After all, you can store very strong acids in glass and plastic bottles.

For instance protein chains unravel (denature) in the presence of acid, but the chain itself remains intact. But the unraveling allows enzymes to attack and break down the chains.
