I doubt it. Why would they hoax it? Wouldn't the idea of hoaxing a mars rover be to make space exploration seem really exciting to the average citizen and thus get people to watch it, and be willing to fund projects like this with billions of tax dollars?
If its a hoax, wouldn't they make it seem exciting, with exciting discoveries that the average tax payer would care about? I mean, how many, non-astronomy people do you think are getting excited about the 500 foot journey that takes 6 months with lots of pictures of rocks that look like something that could be found on earth?. How many people are at home tuning in to watch the latest updates on ice crystals found on mars surface?
If it was fake, don't you think they would be promoting it a lot more to the average joe?
Also, if it was fake, do you really think they would make stupid mistakes like using a natural earth sky? I mean, they have done some nice mars scapes in holliwood. Do you really think for billions of dollars they couldn't get a real special effects person to help make it look realistic?
There are a lot of holes in the fake mars mission theory. The biggest of which is there just isn't any motivation to fake it. The only thing I can think of is if Aston Kusher is behind it and its just the ultimate punk'd
