Car light with spanner not switching off before starting engine on diesel astra?
- 7 years agoBest answer
service light maybe
engine management light has got a flash through it and the picture of the engine and is red.
the service light is orange and has a picture of a spanner in it.
the light may well have not been turned of after the last service or the car may have been serviced out of sequence at some point.
they can some times give problems but the local vauxhaul dealer will check it and turn it off for about 20 quid.Source(s): ex vauxhaul trained tech for all those people that are thumbing down

Does the light stay on when the engine is started? I believe it is the engine management light but I've never had an Astra so I might be wrong.
It is probably worth checking the fault codes anyway. Depending on the model it looks like you can do this yourself with the "pedal test" I've included the instructions below. I had an Omega a few years with a similar trick - its a bit awkward to read, so maybe record it on your phone so you can play it back in your warm house with the fault code list next to you.
1. Get in the car with the ignition off.
2. Press the throttle pedal AND brake pedal down and hold them down.
3. Turn the ignition key to position 1 and then onto position 2.
4. The EML will begin to flash, it should flash 10 times initially and then pause then flash a certain ammount of times, pause, flash a few times again etc etc
E.G... 10 x flash (pause) 1 x flash (pause) 7 x flash (pause) 10 x flash (pause) = 0 1 7 0 which would be: P0170
If there are more than one fault code, it'll then go on and flash a second sequence of numbers and so on and so forth untill it stops.
Just rememeber to keep both pedals pressed down throught the whole procedure.

This indicates that your car has logged a fault in one of the sensors. It is nothing to do with the service interval display.
If you know somebody with an OBD 2 scanner (OBD means On Board Diagnostics) you can plug the scanner into your car's diagnostic socket and read off the error code displayed - and cancel the error code so the light goes off. If it comes on again shortl afterwards you have a problem in the sensor itself, or the sensor is picking up a fault in the component it is monitoring. Hand-held OBD2 scanners cost from about £25 on eBay and can be used on any modern car.
However Astras have many more sensors than those commonly handled by a simple OBD scanner. garages use the Vauxhall/GM Tech2 software to identify these problems.

You simply can't escape the dealer with doing things to your car any longer as without the diagnostic tester the fault can not be found. pain that it might be in the wallet.
to days cars need expert diagnostic testers how do you think we make a living.
the truth is the car even a small one is so complex it has at least six microprocessors built in.
the only way is a diagnostic tester.

a spanner sign normally indicates a problem such as SERVICE REQUIRED, if you have the car manual it will explain in detail what the spanner sign means, it will also explain all the other lights/indicator on the dash for you, , if you don't have the car manual, call into a auto store//car spares shop they will gladly tell you ( for free ) what the sign/warning sign is for, hope this helps,

Engine management light, you need a diagnostic plug in, the car has registererd a fault in the ecu

That's indicating a problem with one of the many sensors. If you power up the ignition with the brake and throttle fully down the panel should give you a clue as to the fault code. From experience I would think an exhaust temperature probe might be about to fail.

tricky one as it, is the service light but its a common fault on vauxhals that they can come on and stay on, on the other hand it may be a sign that you have a problem, to be on the safe side go to a garage and get it plugged in most garages have an error code reader they can also reset it if its just jammed on, hope that helps.

spanner indicates attention ( mechanic etc) needed. check handbook for verification. may be a simple issue ..getting it seen to early saves breakdowns and costs. garage can run a diagnostic for you .

Needs taken to a garage and connected to a diagnostic scanner to see what the fault is, nothing else you can do about it.
