What to use to decorate my cupcakes?

I am wanting to decorate my cupcakes. I have looked around online to find out what to use, and people have said sugar pasted or fondant. Can someone tell me whats best to use and what the difference is? Also where i can buy them? I am not sure what to use, as people have said that sugar paste dont taste...

Personally I think the best is to make your own frosting and while it's soft you can add little decorâtions like sprinkles, silver balls, etc...You can also change the color of your frosting and make little decorations with different colors. If ever, here is a great cupcake recipe.

Pipe a buttercream flower. If you don't know how search it on YouTube. Or just pipe it with buttercream icing and decorate it with sprinkles or candy if you want. You can put maybe a cup of sugar in a saucepan and carmalized it. On medium heat. It will be carmelized after its a brownish color.After this it will be very hot so transfer it into a paper cup and put it in the freezer. After 15 minutes get the carmelized sugar out and crush it. Till it's sort of like sprinkles. I did this today but not with a lot of sugar because I wanted to test it. I thought it would be great for garnishing cupcakes!

Fondant and sugar paste both taste like crap. If you want to decorate your cupcakes, use a homemade frosting or cream (the best taste), and squeeze it on with a fancy star or flower tip. Add a garnish such as chocolate drops or chewy candies.

If that method is too mainstream for your liking, make one chocolate and one vanilla glaze and drizzle it on your cupcakes in a criss-cross, flower, or spiral pattern.

Go to a store and ask someone who works there if they can show you the cake decorating stuff and when you get there you will find loads of stuff to put on your cupcakes hope this helps :)
