They were perfectly within the law to seize the vehicle.
If you want it back then go to the pound with all the necessary documents and pay the fees.
Claim them back from your "friend" if you want.

To your additional details....

Either he/she/it stole the car and you will have reported it at the time to the police. OR they will be given 6-8 points and a fine and for you permitting them to drive it YOU will get the same punishment.

It is 100% up to to make sure they are insured to drive BEFORE you let them drive it, in short if they didn't steal the car or you didn't report it YOU are also the offender.

Yes - they can seize the car if the driver is not insured or licenced. It doesn't matter who owns the car, unless it's been stolen it's about who is driving it at the time. Your friend was driving your car, so your car gets seized. You need to talk to your local police station about getting it back - though it may cost you.

In future, it would probably be a good idea to not lend your car to people who are not insured to drive it.

Why did the police seize your car? was it being used to transport contraband? If so you will have to buy it back at a police auction. Don't loan your car to criminals.

Or was the vehicle seized because the driver didn't have a license and/or insurance. You can usually pick it up for the cost of the impound after 30 days.

Edit: Ah, that would be why then. For what it's worth you ARE an offender, you "caused or permitted" your friend to drive it without insurance. That can get you similar penalties to doing the illegal driving yourself.
