R12 is a 'CFC' refrigerant compound...a 'ChloroFluoroCarbon' which is an Ozone depletion agent and has been banned as a refrigerant since 1994

    Dichlorodifluoromethane:

    ........F

    ........|

    Cl - C - Cl

    ........|

    ........F

R-12 was used in most refrigeration and vehicle air conditioning systems up to 1994 before being replaced by R-134a, which has a lower ozone depletion effect.

Source(s): Many years working with refrigeration systems including Cryogenics down to -165°C.
