Can smoking 1 cigarette cause lung cancer?
I'm 16. I know this might sound silly, but I am really scared now. I tried my first cigarette today and it will probably be my last one too. I just wanted to try it to see what it would be like. My dad was a very light smoker but he ended up dying from lung cancer. My lungs hurt from just smoking one.

There are plenty of people who have never smoked a single cigarette, but still die of lung cancer.
Smoking greatly increases your chance of getting lung cancer, but non-smokers can get it too. One cigarette won't have made any difference to your chances though.

I'm sure you'll be just fine. There are people who have smoked thousands of cigarettes and not had lung cancer but equally some who have cancer and never smoked. Whether or not cancer is the main problem there are lots of detrimental effects of smoking so it is bad for you. I smoked for nearly 40 years and stopped my advice is don't start. No doubt some expert will tell you that one cigarette will take a few seconds off your life but I wouldn't worry about it.

Most people who get lung cancer have smoked upwards of 50 years, averaging over a pack a day. Let's see, that's 20 cigs x 7 days x 52 weeks x 50 years....hmmm, that's about 364000 cigarettes. Right, forgot to factor in leap years. Okay, that's 364240 cigarettes. Yes I'm aware some people get lung cancer after only just 20 years of smoking, but this is EXTREMELY rare. And you know what? They've still probably smoked over 100000 cigarettes. A 20 year smoker only has about a 2% chance of getting lung cancer, and you only smoked 1? Mathematically, your chances are 0.00002%, or about 1 in 5 million. Actually, the official stats aren't linear, so you're chances are probably closer to 1 in 500 million.
You're fine kid.
From what I understand lung cancer is not hereditary. Also, was your father exposed regularly to asbestos or benzene?

The issue is, if you continue to smoke it's VERY unlikely you'll remain at only 1 -2 cigs per day. However, some people smoke moderately to heavily all their lives and never develop lung cancer. Some people never smoke a single drag and do develop lung cancer. No one can tell you if you will develop it or not...but smoking does increase the risks, as well as risks of heart disease and other illnesses because of the effects it has on the body. For example, smoking causes your blood to thicken, thus blood pressure issues could arise. That can be potentially serious. The best way to prevent cancer, is to not participate in the behaviors that raise your risk of getting it. ☺

If that was your first cig and your lungs hurt its probably due to the smoke in your lungs. But I don't think that one cig can give you lung cancer. But I am glad you don't want to do it again.
