The advantages and disadvantages are very personal and depend on what YOU feel is best for your child. If you want your child to compete for the rest of their life then Waldorf Education is NOT for you. If you are unwilling to investigate, ask questions and see for yourself if it is right for your family then it is not for you. If you are someone that only believes in what you can see with your own eyes then perhaps Waldorf is not for you. If you are willing to jump to conclusions without asking why then Waldorf is not for you. Today, with the internet all of the information you could ever want is the tip of your fingers.
-Your kids will not be learning at the same pace as children going through other educational models.
-If you do not like your child's teacher you won't get a new one the next year.
-It is demanding of the home life. If you like Disney and feel there is nothing wrong with taking your kids to McDonald's for the newest princess Happy Meal please for the love of god consider a different school. If you feel there is nothing wrong with your child playing video games and watching TV then this might not be the school for you. If you want your 4 year-old to be the best football player in the NFL and that means he has to start playing now, this might be something your teacher will disagree with you on.
-For the right families Waldorf school can provide a nurturing and loving environment where a child is held in reverence.
-Children learn many more subjects than other school such as hand crafts, wood work, farming, and cooking, to name a few. In these subjects begin the lessons for other subjects such as math and science. Music, art, poetry and dance are not mere electives but brought into everyday.
-If you like to shop for pesticide free food; If you feel that there should be more to education than just learning math, reading and science; if you are willing to investigate, contemplate and challenge your own world view then visit a Waldorf School. If talk of angels and gnomes scare you away then maybe try a Montessori school. If you are enchanted by the singing and in love with the artwork and curious about the games then stay and learn more. Talk to the mothers and fathers there. Do you like them?
The biggest thing to remember is that you have to find what's right for you and and you won't find it on message boards. You will only find it in yourself when you investigate for yourself.
