I "chose" atheism because evidence of deities has yet to be found. All that stuff has nothing to do with it.
Also, a cure for death would be a bad thing. The world would become vastly overpopulated, straining natural resources beyond their limits, which would result in more suffering, and there would also be an increase in war due to conflicts over the increasingly limited available land.
Scientists are currently working on finding cures for most of the diseases that plague mankind, and have already found cures for a lot of them, and religion never even enters that picture. Diplomats are doing their best to help bring about world peace, but there's still a lot work to be done, and religion isn't exactly helping on that one.
Pain is actually a good thing. It lets you know when a bit of you is injured or is in immediate danger of becoming so. Injury, on the other hand, is not a good thing, but human beings are not, and will never be invincible. However, there are doctors and medical scientists who dedicate their lives to minimizing injury and helping the sick and injured recover. Again, no religion needed.
