Giant Leap For Mankind: on July 1969, just eight years after President John F. Kennedy first proclaimed the USA's intention to put a man on the moon - and only five months before the end-of-decade deadline he imposed, Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Buzz Aldrin Jr. pilot their Apollo 11 lunar module, named Eagle, to a landing on the Sea of Tranquillity at 4:17pm Eastern daylight time. Some six hours later, as Armstrong steps down from the landing craft to become the first person to set foot on the moon, he tells the hundreds of millions watching the scene on television. 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.' The following night, to celebrate the event, Motown artists Stevie Wonder, David Ruffin, Chuck Jackson, and Gladys Knight & The Pips perform a concert in Mount Morris Park, Harlem, New York.The moon landing also helps propel a young David Bowie to stardom-though that may not have been part of JFK's original plan-as his breakthrough hit 'Space Oddity' is released almost simultaneously with the events in space.January 3rd: police at Newark Airport, New Jersey, confiscate 30,000 copies of Lennon & Ono's Two Virgins because the cover is considered obscene. January 4th:Bubblegum Music production company Kasenetz-Katz Associates reports an 85 per cent increase in the last year, adding up to $25m worth of records sold by the likes of Ohio Express and 1910 Fruitgum Company. Janurary 17th:Led Zeppelin release their eponymous debut album in the US. January 30th: The Beatles make their final public appearance together - a free concert at lunchtime on the roof of Apple Records HQ in London, which is eventually halted by the police.Smothers Smothered April 4th: the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is cancelled by CBS after a two year run, largely due to the show's anti-establishment humour.March 5th:Cream Magazine is launched in the US. April 3rd:US Deaths in Vietnam now stand at 33,641 - passing the Korean War Total.April 9th: King Crimson play their first gig at the Speakeasy in London.April 16th: Elektra Records boots polemical rockers the MC5 off the label after continual protest from parents and some retailers upset by the band's liberal use of the F-word. April 21st:Canned Heat are signed up to play at the Woodstock Festival for a fee of $13,000.April 26th: Hair the soundtrack LP form the hippy musical, reaches Number One on the US albums chart for the first of 13 weeks.
