Is it just me or are British spiders getting bigger?

Probably not quite the right section but hey. I just seen an absolute monster of a spider on my wall. Its legspan was easily a few inches across, too large to trap in a pint glass without hurting its legs. I don't think I've ever seen such a big spider. Is there are new species that's been brought over from abroad, or are British spiders getting bigger? I don't remember ever seeing spiders this big when I was younger.

I don't think the spiders are getting bigger; having seen a number of these questions recently, I suspect that everybody's favorite Giant House Spider (Tegenaria duellica) may be expanding its range. They really do get pretty substantial.
