a bridge rectifier containin four diodes converts the given ac to dc but the output would be of pulsating dc to convert that one to pure dc a capacitor is used which acts a filter to remove all those pulses in the waveform and produces a output as pure dc .

A rectifier of 1 or 4 diodes will produce DC from AC which can be used for charging but normally a more complicated circuit matched to the type of battery is used that prevents the battery from being damaged by overcharging either by rate or duration.

Rectifier is used to convert the AC to DC. Diode (without control the output voltage) or Silicon controlled rectifier(with control of the output voltage) is the device used in rectifier.

bridge rectifier, you can build it using 4 diodes, google it to know the correct arrangement, at the output you can connect a capacitor to smooth the voltage.
