To try to drum up interest and thereby to make money, by showing exciting moments in the history of the game. The point of showing people that players other than Ovechkin and Crosby exist? Well, the Habs have now knocked out both their teams. No point in having people watch for those two anymore this year. So it's better to show that there are -other- teams and -other- players out there.

I think it's basically a calm way of pumping people up for the Stanely Cup.

I think they're showing some major moments in NHL history itself,

and it's kind of a reminder of what glory can come from it.

Or of course...it's just telling us anything can happen this season.

As it does in any season.

What is the point of any commercial? To get you to use their product. In this case they want to get you to watch/attend games and purchase NHL merchandise.

Getting people fired up and thinking that there will be something incredible this year, so they will all watch.
