Their is definitely a decline in the overall quality of the music. There used to be a time where the lyrics and sound mattered. During that time, musicians all had their own unique sound. Band could rock hard and rock softly, and a group was not made to play all their songs the same. Today, a majority of the alternative artists can't rock hard without sounding whiny. At the same time, music that's meant to sound whiny is played even worse and it is considered alternative. The lyrics of some of the most popular, and widely listened to, artists (such as Paramore) have no quality and are all about vague subjects, not based in reality, and are made of rhymes that are simply meant to rhyme.
That's not even the worst part. Pop music and rap music have almost completely taken over the music industry. Almost all pop is terrible, with very few exceptions. The only good rap that ever existed came out in the 90's and before, when rap wasn't the biggest genre and only the real gems came into the public's view. But now, thanks to iTunes and money grubbing companies, terrible pop and rap is forced upon the public. Let's take a fairly good modern alternative band called "Cage The Elephant." Their first hit single "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" was discovered by people and was not forced upon everyone else. The music video was made a couple months after the successful release of the album. Let's take one of the worst performers of our generation, Justin Bieber. His music video "One Time" was made before anyone had ever even heard of him. The song was on the radio a couple of weeks after the music video was made. No one truly discovered Justin Bieber. Usher found him on YouTube, and then decided to get him in the recording studio. Tell me if you find something wrong with this sentence. His producer is a rapper that has no talent or producing experience and discovered him on YouTube. If the first thing that came to your mind was "Epic Fail," then you can pat yourself on the back because you are most definitely sane.
However, it's really due to the most populer kids of our generation, and the kids with the lowest self-esteem. These popular kids listen to and watch MTV to decide what's cool. These kids with low self-esteem and the need to be accepted by their peers follow the examples set by the popular kids. When people don't think for themselves, and let other people live their lives, that's where we find problems. I have no need to feel accepted, and I think for myself. I know what kind of music I like, and I won't let anyone else tell me differently. When these morons were trying to pick a fight with me and my friends (because they didn't like us for our sexual orientations) they tried making fun of my t-shirt. It was the AC/DC Powerage cover on my t-shirt, and they tried to put me down by telling me that AC/DC was a "gay band." Guess who's still listens to the high voltage rock and roll of the legendary AC/DC? Me, that's who.
Anyone that I like to hang around thinks for themselves. They don't like what the media tells them to like. A lot of us like music that most people have never heard of. We like what other people ignore. My best friend has started an Avant-Garde World-Fusion Metal band. I have started a Hard Rocking Ska-Funk band (a blend of the funkiest and hardest rocking elements of several different diverse genres, and mixing them in with Ska-Punk).
I believe that if we can introduce our current generation to sounds that the media doesn't talk about or expose, we can get the good quality of music back to where it was throughout the 70's, 80's, and 90's.
