What is the Difference between an Otaku and a Nerd?

To be honest i thought they were the same thing but apparently there not

In the US, it generally refers solely to anime/manga geeks, and you're as likely to see people self-identify as otakus and wear the name with pride as you are to hear it used as a criticism. In Japan, otaku can refer to a geek specializing in any field, and it's far more likely to be used in a pejorative manner; some people think otaku is synonymous with hikikomori.

Well, an Otaku is an Anime freak...Nerds can be nerdy about anything :O

Otakus are :
Technically nerds, whose interest is basically anime, manga, video games and moe. (Well, maybe moe.)

Now, Nerds are basically people who have interest in things that AREN'T anime, manga or video games. So, you can be a nerd about things like Marvel DC heros, but you can't be an Otaku about Marvel DC crap.
