The meaning of otaku varies depending on the region. In the US, it generally refers solely to anime/manga geeks, and you're as likely to see people self-identify as otakus and wear the name with pride as you are to hear it used as a criticism. In Japan, otaku can refer to a geek specializing in any field, and it's far more likely to be used in a pejorative manner; some people think otaku is synonymous with hikikomori.
