Well, here's an example: Windows Internet Explorer 8. It's new and it's an improvement from the earlier version, Windows Internet Explorer 7. Something that is new and improved is improving the standards from a previous model.

Well, if something is Extraordinary, why doesn't that mean it's more Ordinary than usual?

To answer your question, let's look at it this way:

You have Tide and you have Gain. They are both scented and have extraordinary cleaning capabilities.

Then along comes a NEW laundry product. It's called The Big Bang. Not only does it clean better than Tide and Gain, but it is an IMPROVEMENT over both of them because the dirt is not left in the wash water; it is actually turns the water into dark matter and sucks all the dirt into a Black Hole along with stray socks. "New AND Improved".

Gimmicky advertising,...makes you wonder what you was getting before it was "improved", which if I remember right, was "improved" on the original when it was really "new"!!!

Compared to the original, it's 'newer' and more advanced, hence : improved. :) ♥

Good point. Nearly as bad as tautology, for example free gift. Aren't all gifts free?
