I see those who don't live in Las Vegas showing their ignorance, AS USUAL. Go back and hide in your holes........
First, I'll address the arena issue:
There are already plans to build an arena behind Bally's. So much for the SPACE issue someone else brought up. Construction was halted due to the economy, not a lack of space. An alternate site (Which I think is better with better highway access) is on some old Union Pacific Railroad property near downtown purchased by the city years ago. The City of Las Vegas wants to build an arena and minor-league stadium, but won't commit the money until a team commits there..Catch-22 unfortunately.
Gambling- Casinos only get around 2-3% of their revenues from NHL betting. If betting was an issue, there would be NO Canadian teams, as they have Pro-LIne, which IS ALSO BETTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oops, there goes the Canadian teams......
Betting has been allowed on NCAA March Madness with no difficulties, even allowing bets on UNLV and UNR( Reno).
Gambling issues always come up when ILLEGAL bookmakers are involved.
Sponsorship..Erin, do you have your head in the ground that DEEP to think that Playboy is the only corporation here? Many companies move here because of the favorable tax climate for businesses. Zappos Shoe company has already expressed interest and they have a HUGE distribution warehouse here. That is just for starters. Sure, the casinos will also give sponsorship, why not? By the way, prostitution is ILLEGAL in Clark County. yes, there are illegal hookers, just like in New York, PITTSBURGH, , Chicago, LA, Boston, etc. I guess we need to take those teams away as well.
Apparently producer Jerry Bruckheimer is willing to purchase an expansion franchise for Las Vegas when an arena is in place. The owners aren't going to turn down 15 million dollars each.
Now, despite all that, I do have misgivings. One, if the team is marketed exclusively to tourists, eventually the fan base will dwindle as the novelty wears off. As long as us "locals" are included in the team's plans, the team has a chance. The economy does suck right now, with unemployment around 15%, I think only Detroit's is higher...... Maybe in 5 years after the economy recovers and people start to visit more like they used to. More people= more tax dollars.
I am unhappy with the choice of arena location, but since it is supposed to be built with private funding, it is what it is. The Strip is crowded enough on a weekend night, especially if a big boxing match or concert is in town. Makes it tough to get to.
Just to add, during the Awards Show, the players had a good time, and no arrests were made, no scandals ensued. The tickets were just over-priced.
We also had an IHL team here, the Thunder, back in the 90's when the IHL was equal to the AHL. which folded because they had a lousy lease deal with the Thomas and Mack Center( UNLV), and refused to raise ticket prices to make up difference. During his contract dispute, Cujo played with the team for a while, and it was great to get a chanc eto meet him in his younger, better days. The IHL itself folded anyway a few years later. Now I go to Las Vegas Wranglers games in the ECHL. Yes, attendance has suffered as well, but again due to the economy, not the abundance of hookers and gambling taht everyone thinks exists on every street corner.. I enjoy it very much.
I could go on making you look foolish, but my fingers are tired of typing. Stick to what you know best , bandwagoning, and saying players suck after only one game.
And don't even try that "I was taken out of context" crap!
EXCUSE ME...where did I ever mention Crime rates???? I said unemployment, because of the national economy keeping people from visiting here, as well as the housing market problems , which was caused by investors coming from CALIFORNIA then walking away from their homes when they couldn't flip them.....Showing your ignorance again, I see
And trust me, I know I can't change the mind of someone that doesn't have an intelligent one.
Why not? You take stabs at things you know NOTHING about!!!!
ooooh, gonna block me now? I'm scared
LUTD-I was hoping you'd show up for this one
Edit: "Vegas has a TON of crime problems" Your words, not mine. I guess I read better than a pseudo-Ivy Leaguer. And the only "stat" I mentioned was the 2-3% revenues that casinos get from hockey betting, as well as the unemployment rate.
I guess the title of your question gave it away, huh? Time to backtrack.
"I hope that the NHL never does move to Las Vegas, just for your sake. Maybe then you'll learn your lesson."
Nice statement. Did your Ivy League intellect think that one up all by itself? Wow, I am just blown away by the depth of your statement. Sure put me in my place...... I guess the only possible response to the profound statement that your vastly superior mind could relate to is this:
"I'm rubber, you're glue. Anything bad you say to me bounces off and sticks to you."
Next time let mommy come up with something more keeping with that university degree.
