Successful soldiers of the Battle of the Somme WW1?

I know that many British and French soldiers died at the Battle of the Somme but so did German. I was wondering why this was, and what did the Allied do when they got to the German Trenches. I can't find this on the internet or in books anywhere.

Thanks
