For starters I think there should be an across the board 50% cut in the entire Federal Government. Once half of the people are doing twice the work, I think they would be about equal to the private sector for what is expected of their production. Secondly, every program that does not support a "majority" of the public should be stopped (i.e., money to a few "artists" out of taxpayer funds is not helping a majority of Americans; it's helping a few artists.) Programs that pay for farmers not to produce (set aside) should end. The market should drive what farmers produce and earn (growing too much of the wrong thing is the same as too many basket makers making the same basket and having no market - find a crop that sells.) Actually, every subsidy should end and applications for new ones should be submitted every three years to prevent "life long" payments like the subsidies "rural electric" companies are getting to bring electricity out to the farmers. (Like didn't that happen 60-70 years ago?)
Advertising for the Military is a public service announcement - why do the commercials say "Paid for by the Navy" - no, that is paid for by the taxpayers. TV stations should run public service announcements as part of their contracts for using the airwaves.
I could go on, but I should stop and get a cup of coffee. This subject gets my blood pressure up a couple dozen points.
