The child-free housewife is devalued from just about all directions...
... first, there's the camp that thinks "if you don't have children, you must be lazy if you're not working outside the home"... because, what else is there to do, right? :)
... second, there's the camp that will villify you for being so "selfish" as to not have children (that is our purpose, as women, doncha know! ug.)
...third, there will be the perception that you're "wasting" your education (because clearly, there are no intellectually stimulating pursuits available to you, as a childless, stay-at-home-wife...)
... some strains of feminists will tell you you're weakening yourself by being "dependent" on your husband financially; others will tell you you're weakening women's equality by not banging your head against the glass ceiling with a group of your peers...
... I'm sure there are lots of other "reasons," but you know as well as I do that they're all silly.
It's obvious that you guys made reasoned choices, and I, for one (for what it's worth), applaud your choice to not waste 40+ hours a week working for free (after taxes and the costs associated with working). That's a waste of energy, unless you're doing something you truly love.
You're clearly well-educated and intelligent. I'm sure you can think of some choice expletives for your nay-saying buttinskies. (Or, just tell them you're so busy preparing some arcane rituals and building your bunker that you don't have time to work outside the home... then cackle menacingly... gets them every time. :) )
