Why do they call steam rollers, steam rollers?

Why do they call steam rollers, steam rollers? They don't produce, get rid of, or have anythong to do with steam

    Because they were originally run from steam engines just like the first tractors were. Steam engines were a reliable power source and just about anything could be used as fuel to fire up the engine -

    Because they ROLL and they STEAM at the same time. They are like an iron.

    in olden days they were powered by steam
