Vauxhall Astra 2005. Air Conditioning problem. Does not come on.?

Light does not light up on the switch but all fuses appear OK.

    It will not come on if the refrigerant gas level has dropped too low. maybe due to a leak or has just lost some over time as they all seem to.

    It will not come on if the ventilation fan is not also on.

    As the light doesn't operate it sounds more like to be a defective switch. Try replacing it with a new one, it should work okay if you say that the fuse is in tact.

    EDIT: I have spoken to a local mechanic and he said that it definitely needs re-gassing. Apparently there are electrical contacts and when the pressure is up it makes the contacts which operates the switch. If the gas is low it fails to operate the contacts leading to no function of A/C unit.

    I have the same car as you but i havent a clue how my A/C works. I normally open the window a bit to let some cool air in.
