What is the difference between socialism and national socialism?

Consider a person living in East Germany in the middle decades of 20th century. Before WW2 he was ruled by an oppressive bureaucracy (nazi) which tolerated no criticism or complaint, whose rule was enforced by a brutal secret police called the gestapo. After WW2 he was ruled by an oppressive bureaucracy (communist) whose rule was enforced by a brutal secret police called the stazi

Different label on the can, same content

Two halves of the same bum (bottom)! You are so right! Even the uniforms were very similar. The difference between "national" socialism and ordinary socialism - "international" socialism - was the difference between two competitive football teams. The national socialists believed that the way forward was for the "master race" to embrace socialism and impose it on everyone else - "inferior races". The international socialists believed that the way forward was for the "vanguard of the proletariat" (read shock troops of the "master class") to embrace socialism and impose it internationally on the "inferior classes" - bourgeoisie and aristocrats, etc. Frankly, it does not matter much to me whether my brains are blown out or my penis is torn off by a guy or gal who self-identifies as a member of the "master race" or as a member of the "proletariat" or as they were once known in France, as the "sans culottes". They are both fetid scum that ought to be emptied into history's trash can. Sadly, there are still these people preying on others in Havana.

Both offered brutality and oppression, and only allowed those who toe the party line to survive.

National socialism adds to socialism - you also have to be of the right ethnic group to be allowed to survive. It's the same content, but with racism as an added ingredient.

Which is why I would consider the Nazis to be slightly worse than the communists.

There are actually many fundamental differences. For one, it's important to remember the context of the rise of the Nazi Party and Hitler. Not long before this, communists had led an uprising in Germany that had failed, so there was a strong sense of defeatism among its supporters. Using the words "National Socialism" was convenient as to pull former supporters of the left onto its side, even though the Nazis got most of their support from people already on the far-right.

For one, socialism calls for the workers to collectively own the means of production, and bases its ideology on historical materialism, which means that all societal upheaval has been defined through class struggle. One class will overthrow the former ruling class and establish itself as the ruling class, like from monarchies (where aristocrats ruled over the bourgeoisie, the proletariat, and the peasantry) to liberal capitalist democracies (where the bourgeoisie rules over the proletariat and peasantry and suppresses the former monarchy) then to socialism (where the proletariat and peasants rule in alliance and suppress the former bourgeoisie from returning to power).

National Socialism negates the concept of class struggle, and believes in uniting across class lines to engage in a race struggle. Hitler most specifically claims that societal upheaval is based on racial and ethnic tension. Since Marxist socialism is a fundamentally economic philosophy, with social aspects more expanded upon by later theorists, we can see that economically they have nothing in common. In socialism the workers are meant to control the wealth of society and distribute it based upon one's work. In national socialism, the ownership of wealth and productive forces in society does not undergo a radical change from the old society where a wealthy ruling class pays you wages based on what's best for their own profits.

You're right to say that in the Eastern Bloc countries there was a very rigid bureaucracy that developed and political repression definitely existed. What's important to realize is that where National Socialists will advocate political repression and persecution to enforce state power, Marxist socialists do not generally believe that this is the way society should function. Most of us believe in free speech and authentic democracy.

No. National Socialism was a strand of Fascism.

    Socialism is an internationalist philosophy.

National socialism is a contradiction in terms.

Hitlers nazi party only used the word 'socialism' to con workers into voting for him.

The German nazi's were a far right fascist party. The antithesis of socialism!

national socialism is what hitler offered in order to get into power, no?

    That would be wholly incorrect.

Communism is the complete and total LACK of government. NO GOVERNMENT WHATSOEVER.

Fascism is complete and total government control.

Socialism is a stepping stone on the way to a complete lack of government. National Socialism is a propaganda word, and in reality is Nationalism, and is a stepping stone on the way to total government control.

What the Soviet Union was was Fascist. They just had a really good propaganda wing of the government, that did one h*ll of a job convincing everyone they had Communism. They didn't, or there would have been no government with a propaganda wing, or really any wing at all. The government would not have existed.
