Birth marriage and death certificates are not free. You cannot view the actual records online. That may soon change if the English& Welsh GRO follow the Scottish model, but even then you have to pay to view the records, and only records older than a certain date are viewable online.

What most people search online is the BMD *INDEXES*. That word is very important. All you get is a name, registration district and a volume and page number which is the information you need to pay your £7 to the GRO and buy the certificate itself. The complete indexes from 1837 to about 2005 are up on websites like ancestry.co.uk and findmypast.com, but you do have to pay or have a subscription. For some time now, volunteers have been working hard to put the indexes up online for free at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ , but the project is not 100% complete for all years and only goes up to about 1920 at the moment. For anything after these years, you have to pay.

There aren't any free ones, plenty of pay ones though.
