I came across this because I had the same question. A close friend who has been divorced, wants to marry again for love and her Christian beliefs but does not want to have the legal issues associated with it. She does not want to legally change her name and they both have their own homes, belongings, vehicles, money, insurance, etc. They plan on keeping their financials seperate and will have no shared purchases. They simply want to have a commitment ceremony to be joined in front of their friends and in the eyes of God. Marriage licenses used to not exist, the only purpose they serve is to pay for the administrative fees for people to get a marraige license! Yes getting legally married in the eyes of the government can provide you tax benefits and priviledges, but I think taking advantage of those benefits should be optional. Christians want to get married and have a ceremony to be married in the eyes of God not the government. I've come to realize that I have a lot of friends that are divorced that don't want to remarry solely because of the legal reprecussions if it doesn't work out. Especially if they have already had their stuff stolen, credit rating ruined, retirement dipped into, etc. because of an ex-spouse.
