Paxil isn't one of antidepressants that usually cause anxiety.

Most antidepressants cause dry mouth; drowsiness (at beginning of treatment), slightly blurred vision; sometimes it can affect your ability to keep orgasm or ejaculate...(but you could use Viagra).

WellbutrinXL is a good antidepressant as is Effexor XR (though Effexor is sometimes difficult to withdraw from).

Cymbalta is a newer antidepressant with less side effects.

Depending on your symptoms: atypical meds are:

    Neurontin & Topamax

Wellbutrin XL also works well for anxiety.

Other antianxiety meds are:Ativan; Xanax; Klonipin; Buspar

I think it's worth taking to relieve your mood & anxiety.

I believe therapy is also important to do at same time.

    Good luck to you.

I've been on Paxil for about four years now and I'd have to say the worst side effect has been the loss of sexual desire and weight gain. Also, if you forget a pill or two, the dizziness sucks! You get all spacey and can't concentrate. Paxil doesn't make you more anxious, it actually helps with anxiety. At least it does me. It is actually supposed to be more for anxiety than depression. But you should explore your options and be sure to be accurate with your doctor about your symptoms/feelings. Good luck feeling better.

No problems taking it, huge problems getting off of it. I have been on several types of anti-depressants both tricyclics and seratonin reuptake inhibiters such as Paxil. The withdrawal from Paxil was so difficult that for a time I thought I would have to take it forever. I had to wean myself off of it over a very long period of time. Try the tricyclics. They have been around much longer and have a much better history than the relatively newer drugs.

Paxil is the only one that gave me real relief, but it was a 'darker before the dawn' deal. For the first 3-4 weeks all I wanted to do was sleep. My appetite was decreased - in my particular case that was a good thing!

There are several good anti-depressants, and what works for one person may or may not work for someone else. If anxiety is a problem for you, talk to your doctor about Vistaril. It is a lightweight H2 inhibitor, and it is not addicting.

    Good luck!

I take 50mg Paxil per day for depression and anxiety and it helps me. Not enough, but it is useful. I once went off of it with no withdrawal effects but I was only taking 25mg a day then, so I don't know how well I would do coming off of it now, but I can miss a day or two of it with no ill effects.

No, anxiety should not be a side effect of paxil. It can cause drowsiness and weight gain. You should not stop taking it abruptly as this can cause severe headaches and mood swings. You should wean off slowly if you wish to stop taking it. All of this is common for most antidepressants.
