    avi is close to raw data, making it hard to compress.

    bzip2 seems to be the best program to compress these kind of files;

    Windows Media Encoder is the best way to encode if you want to save space. Besides, it's a free download from Microsoft.

    In standard def video (720x480 x 29.97 fps):

    Raw DV avi is about 25 megabit/sec (3.61 megabytes/sec)

    MPeg2 DVD good quality is about 7 megabit/sec

    WMV of really equal quality is between 1 and 2 megabit/sec.

    Zip is not a good algorithym for video and ziping a video file can often end up with a larger file than the original. Video compressors are specifically designed to capture the things your likely to notice while throwing away what your unlikely to notice.

    If you want to compress this file to save for archival use--maybe editing it later--then don't compress it. Move it to another storage device.

    You could edit the video, too. Snip out the scenes that don't add anything.

    However, you just want to shrink the file for use in a low-resolution place, like online video, then use your video editor to export it with a lower bit rate, and smaller frame dimension.

    Then, use a free converter like Super from erightsoft.com to further convert the file into a format that suits your purpose and makes the file smaller.

    If you want to permanently reduce the file size, compress it using VirtualDub and a codec you have available on your computer. Otherwise, compress it into a *.zip file and it should reduce the size greatly until you want to open the *.avi file again.
